South African Steam
Author: masterphots

Thought I'd post a few steam shots from South Africa.  Nothing in particular,  just a few favorites from a collective eight months over there over a period of 12 years.

1.  Ladies in Waiting at De Aar shed  4/13/88.   25NC class 4-8-4s Marta, Lady Jane and Katy await their next assignment to haul a freight train north to Kimberly.

2.  25NC 3517 at speed near Potfontein.  4/12/88.  That's Harold Edmonson wearing the UP 3985 cap in the gangway

3.  Alfred County Ry. 2 ft gauge Garratt 141 hauls empty long flats back to Donnybrook.  Renken, S.A.  7/28/90   ACR was a privatized operation of the former SAR line.

All the gauges are so clean that looks like brand new.

Even when stopped at a siding, the crew would be polishing brass all over the engine.

Great series, Alan.  Thanks!

Regrettably, I never got to see that stuff in person.

Great set Alan, thanks. Has the Garratt got one of the Lempor exhausts, designed by the Argentinian engineer L D Porta?

Not sure but the stack is surely different.  I seem to remember David Wardale was involved when the ACR refurbished those engines, so could be.
