Transap SD39M-3 3004W stops a few miles outside of Laja, Chile on 1/10/19.   Being 90-degree summer weather,  maybe grab a cold one while waiting for the new crew to arrive.  I forgot to ask why the change didn't take place in downtown Laja,  where the railroad shops and yard are.  I'm not aware of any hours of service rules in Chile.   The unit, one of four, was built by Wabtec in San Luis Potosi, Mexico,  using SP GP40-2s as the base.  The SP units used were 7259, 63, 71,72  but we've never verified which became which on Transap.  They are now 5 ft 6 in gauge and C-C.

I agree! A really cool picture. It looks like a nice place to hang out for a little while and catch some trains!

 

Great shot. Didn't realize that some of the SP units were broad gauge too.

Trucks weren't one of the things that were used....lol   Also, to accommodate the loading gauge, fan rings and other bits on top were removed so the highest point is just behind the cab roof.   Here's a photo of D-3004 when new.  Mininco, Chile  Feb 3, 2006

Left side of the unit.   Also a bell although I've never heard a bell used in 25 years of train chasing in Chile.  Mininco 2/1/08

Actually about a train length behind the road is a bridge over a small river,  complete with a little beach on the far side of the bridge.  Trees have now grown up on both sides of the bridge and there went a great photo location.  Will post a couple of photos in a bit.

Nice unit.  Interesting to know that Chile also  have boad gauge like Brazil. Interesting to note that the fuel tank was reduced to received the C-C trucks. The old B-B units converted to narrow gauge in Brazil received big porches in each end to receive the new BB-BB trucks and keep almost the same size of the original fuel tank

Here the line hauls aren't very far and, given light rail in places, weight can also be an issue on some lines.   Hence smaller fuel tanks.
