EMD/Progress Rail Locomotives on test in Russia
Author: zorz

According to Railway Gazette: "Yakutia Railway has taken delivery of a Progress Rail EMD 2TE3250 twin-section diesel locomotive for testing in the region’s extreme environment."

The units are basically two SD70ACe-LC's with smaller fuel tanks that are semi-permanently coupled. They seem to have some measure of weatherproofing, but are not a radical departure in design from what I can see. The russian climate is definitely quite extreme, but also not that crazier than interior Alaska or Labrador in the dead of winter, so I'm wondering if PR's logic is if they could weatherproof for QNS&L then Russia should be doable with a largely off-the-shelf design.

This railway, which currently stretches 1200 km from Bamovskaya (at its south end, where it meets the Trans-Siberian Railway) to Nizhny Bestyakh (at its north end, across the Lena River from Yakutsk), is in its long-range plans going to reach the Bering Strait, so maybe EMD/Progress Rail is really looking to the future.

Is this railway standard guage or the Russian broad guage (5 foot)?

In 1843 the Russian Empire adopted a track gauge of 1524mm or 5ft.
In 1960 the then Soviet Union re-defined the gauge as 1520mm or 4ft. 11 & 27/32in.
This standard for conversion is: 1 Millimeter = 0.03937007874 Inches.

Looks like 5ft will work then. Otherwise we are nitpicking on what? An 1/8 of an inch. The track will be out of gauge that much. Run it!

So that's what a Milwaukee ACe would have looked like;)

IIRC Spain and Portugal's nominal 5'6" gauge is different by a couple of mm, doesn't seem to cause an issue.
