Zimbabwe Garretts Plus One
Author: bobwilcox

In 1987 I joined a tour organized by Lou Johnson for two weeks focusing around Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. In those days, the National Railways of Zimbabwe’s (NRZ) steam operations centered on the Bulawayo to Victoria Falls mainline, the West Nicholson branch, and switching in Bulawayo. The locations are from limited notes taken 34 years ago. If you have better knowledge, feel free to let us know.
  1. 741 a 4-8-2+2-8-4 is at the Bulawayo engine terminal. Beyer-Peacock built her and her fellow 20A class member in 1957-58.
  2. 419 a 4-6-4+4-6-4 near Thompson Junction. She was built by Societe Franco-Belge in 1952.
  3. 734, a 4-8-2+2-8-4 moves another train near Thompson Junction.

  2. Wankie Colliery #6 delivers a cut of coal loads to NRZ at Thompson Junction. Henschel built this 4-8-2 in 1951.
  3. NRZ 393 & 747 at Dete?

  1. NRZ 734 (4-8-2+4-8-2) getting underway from Dete.
  2. NRZ 613 (2-8-2+2-8-2) on one of the West Nicholson branch’s stiff grades. This branch’s primary purpose was taking cement away from the plant at Colleen Bawn.
  3. NRZ 607 (2-8-2+2-8-2) on the West Nicholson branch. The third car in this train carries soldiers with heavy machine guns on the lookout for “dissidents.”

I don't seen any sand lines down by the drivers.  Did they have sanders?  If yes, where was it carried?

Along with China, one of the last two real steam operations in the world. Now waiting for someone to say they are ugly locos! By the time I first got to southern Africa in 1998, Bulawayo operations were confined to shunting the yard with about 4 locos in service. Corrections welcome but I believe it's all diesels now excepting special occasions. Here's No. 602 in 2001 at Bulawayo shed.

Lovely to see these, Bob. First photo #3 of 734 is coming around Baobab Hill. In '87 I was living a few yards from the Baobab Hotel, so there's a fair chance I joined railfan groups for a few beers! It was good to get away from power station talk and colleagues!!  chris uk.
