Coal train derails and kills two children in northern Mozambique

A coal transport convoy derailed today in northern Mozambique and two children, seriously injuring two others, announced local authorities quoted by Radio Moçambique.

One composition linked Vale's mines in Moatize to the port of Nacala, when 40 of the 120 wagons fell off a bridge over the Namutimba River, Cuamba city, Niassa province, hitting children who were swimming.

Witnesses interviewed on the radio claim that the convoy was going faster than normal, that there were carriages that separated and collided with each other, falling into the river.

“This is a place where there are normally children taking a bath and when there was a derailment they were there,” said João Manguiche, district administrator of Cuamba, at the scene of the accident.

“We don't have the exact were number,” he added.

According to the official, the presence of technicians from the Northern Development Corridor, the company that manages the line, is expected to "find out the causes" of the accident.

A 10,000-ton coal transport train and four locomotives were also part of it.
