were built unlike US types because of that.
That was a surprise to me.

Fantastic photos.

Thanks again everyone.

Some of my night photos at work but not all were taking using a Samsung Galaxy S20.

All of my photos are taken in South Australia unless noted in the details.

Australia has been running double stacks since the late 80's. Currently they can run from Adelaide, South Australia to Perth, Western Australia, Parkes, New South Wales to Perth and up to Darwin in the Northern Territory. As locomotives need to be built to run all over the standard gauge system in different states they have to be built to a set profile.

Cheers,
Justin

Several pictures show trains with 5 engines.  Any idea of the tonnage being pulled?

Thanks again everyone.

These grain trains are around 4600 metric tonnes when loaded and run on 2.2 percent grades. Most of the locomotives only run 19.5 to 21t axle loads which means their haulage capacity isn't great.

A 4300hp, AC traction locomotive is only rated for 1500t and those 3000hp, DC units are only 950t.

REally nice series, but I have to ask how you guys in the land down under would handle an American Railfan?  I have always wanted to do a chase or something there in Australia, and also hit up the Pilbarra region.  IF there is access what type would it be?

Thanks again eveyone.

Following trains in Australia is quite easy. As for the Pilbara region this is a bit harder as you need to hire a mine spec vehicle, get approvals etc. It is also quite expensive to go up there.
