Empty chemical train X761 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today afternoon I visited Pedro Leopoldo town,  about 15 km from my town. It is a very nice town where VLI has EWL yard. The old EPL yard and station are closed nowadays. So, we only see trains running at mainline. While I was there, the empty chemical train X761 passed through town bound to Bahia state.

1 - 2) Pedro Leopoldo station, from former Central of Brazil railroad (EFCB). Nowadays it is a library.
3) Old EFCB carpentry shops from the steam era.

Couple of obversations:   Tank cars are as big as the engines and the crossing signals don't work.  From the looks of them they have not worked for a long time. Who is supposed to maintain them?

Thannks for the posting.

The crossing signal was shut down but the cabin has a buzzer. Note the crossing has a cabin for a signalman 24 hours a day ( the guy with yellow shirt in the video). A bell in the cabin alert him the train is coming,  so he stops the road traffic in time to the train pass.

Very interesting series! Glad there is a crossing man to stop traffic with the looks of the crossing signals.

That is amazing they would pay a man to protect a crossing instead of working signals.  Has to be more expensive to furnish 24 hours of a mans salary.  I guess the reason it is so amazing to us in the U S is our railroads stopped manned crossings many decades ago.
Thanks Pedro.

Some crossing are more dangerous than others and the town community ask for a better way to protect them since people obey more to a man with a flag in hand than a pole with flassing lights. That's why in some locations the railroads are asked to put a man and cabin. I know a few locations where we can see these guys protecting the crossing,  not only on VLI system,  but also on MRS railroad.  In this thread you can see a man protecting the crossing in the MRS Centro line https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?6,5182770

Great stuff Pedro - can't get enough of narrow-gauge freight on dual-gauge track!
