Fepasa Chile this n that
Author: masterphots

1.  SD39M-2  No. 2352 south.south of E. Meiggs, Chile.  2/8/22    The unit is an SD39M-2 built by NRE Dixmoor from SP GP35 7769/6666.
              E. Meiggs is named for Ernesto Meiggs,  an American engineer who is credited with building a number of railways in South America, most notably the Central of Peru.
2.  SD40-2 3302 (x-BNSF 6385) helper drifting down at E. Meiggs.  2/8/22    This unit was repainted from the 'art in motion' scheme,  which resembled the KCS Bicentennial SD40s.
3.   Alco RSD20 1807 southbound at Putagan, Chile  2/3/22    The second unit is SDL39  2349  (x-MILW/WC 586)  Interesting to see the difference in height between the export Alco and the SDL39.

All of the following photos are of units that have had their cabs armored plates with bulletproof windows.  This due to random attacks on trains between Pua and Mininco in the heart of the timber/cellulose area.

 4.   SDL39 2345 (x-MILW/WC 588).  Temuco, Chile  2/28/22
 5.   SDL 2341 (x-MILW/WC 583) with MU car and 2345 at Temuco.  2/28/22
 6.   SDM39-2 2355 at Temuco.   This one built by NRE Dixmoor from EL GP35 2582/CR 3688,  This one's cab was fortified when overhauled by an outside company,  rather than the other units where Fepasa added the protection.

8.   U6B 5108 switching log cars at Victoria, Chile.   2/28/22

Great series !  Good to see those SDL 39s are still around.  Those Air Conditioning Units mounted on the short hoods are different.

All nine SDL39s are going strong.  The railroad loves them.  The A/C units can't be on top due to  loading gauge limitations.  Cab roof is the highest point on former USA hood units here.  The export units such as the Alco RSD20s have lower profiles.

Very nice locomotives. Did you see the ones rebuilt here in Brazil?

Hello Alan - is that permanent? So no more trains to Antilhue, Osorno and Puerto Montt?

Puerto Montt ended many years ago.  There is a short segment out of Valdivia but only for the steam excursions to run.  Other than that nothing,  again for years.  But the mainline south is shut down.  In Fruitilar for example they´ve paved over a couple of grade crossings.  It won´t be long before people start building things along the right of way.  Also the Llonquimay Branch out of Pua is long gone.  There track has been lifted.  So that long tunnel to Sierra Nevada is now auto only,  not shared with the railway.  Temuco is now the southern base of Fepasa operations with a shop, etc.

Thanks, glad I rode it when I did.
