International Railroad Discussion > EFOM: a great narrow gauge steam site in BrazilDate: 04/26/22 16:25 EFOM: a great narrow gauge steam site in Brazil Author: pedrop I received some pictures taken in the last few days from a friend Christoffer Chris that visited some locations served by former Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas - EFOM, one of the great narrow gauge railroads built in Brazil in the 188Os, liking Sitio (the town of Antônio Carlos nowadays) to São José Del Rey ( later changed to São João Del Rey). The company extended the tracks to the west and reached more than 600 km in the mainline. Later it changed the plans to continue with 762 mm gauge and start to built other tracks with 1,000 mm gauge and rebuilt many 762 mm gauge to 1,000 mm. There are a lot of information about EFOM in the internet, including the facebook page EFOM . The railroad operated until 1982, when it was closed and the tracks removed. A section of 17 km between São João Del Rey and Tiradentes was rebuilt to tourism in the following years and noways it is operated by VLI railroad.
In 1981 Trains Magazine published an article about EFOM and its collection of narrow gauge Baldwins. Pictures from friend Christoffer Chris. 1) The 1981 issue of Trains magazine is easy found on e-bay; 2) The EFOM map; 3) Unit 66 is preserved in Antonio Carlos (former Sitio) where EFOM had a junction with former broad gauge Central do Brasil, now operated by MRS.
