International Railroad Discussion > Derailment of fuel train D774 ( Brazil)Date: 09/01/22 06:32 Derailment of fuel train D774 ( Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, last week (8/28/2022) fuel train D774 derailed at Km 340 in Iaçu BA. The train was leaded by two U20C, plus one DPU, and had 31 tank cars, being 8 with gasoline and 23 with diesel. The location is about 1,226 km from my town. Video from friends there. No injuries to the crew. The location is like a desert, hot and dry, with a few people living nearby.

Really looks like a bad one. I am surprised it did not blow up with all that gasoline. You know plenty of sparks from a derailment. Uncle Joe Seffner,Fl. Welded rail, would be interested to know what caused the derailment.

Interesting that in August 31, 1983 a fuel train like this also derailed not far from that location and cause the death of 42 people instantly and burning 89 people in severy conditions among many other that were stolen gasoline. In the following days the number of death people increased to almost 100. The tragedy is famous here and known as "Pojuca Accident".
The video in the link below is narrated in portuguese, but we can undertand that tragedy watching the scenes. Larry Date: 09/12/22 23:37 Re: Derailment of fuel train D774 ( Brazil) Author: E25 I don't think I would volunteer for the clean-up work. I guess they could try to pump-out the gasolene first before they move anything that could cause a spark. Maybe foam everything down, too. Perhaps it would be safer just to clear the area and deliberately ignite it.
I'll be interested to see your follow-up report, Pedro. Greg Stadter Phoenix, AZ Date: 09/13/22 05:50 Re: Derailment of fuel train D774 ( Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, the tracks were open to the train a few days later. They put the cars back to the tracks using cranes. No information if they pumped-out the fuel before the operation. I imagine they did it.
