Hi folks
MRS railroad is testing a new locomotive template on the tracks. A special template was mounted on a C44 and the train is running  with a couple of ES44 testing the clearance of the tracks that serves the ore mines. It looks a ES58ACi profile. Vale mine has a fleet of ES58ACi and MRS did a test with one of them years ago, but not on all tracks. The rumors say MRS will put the ES58s in the ore trains and move the AC44s to grain and cellulose ones. Wabtech produced three ES44 to MRS, but the rumors say they didn't like the model. They said the ES44 performance is too close to the AC44, so they will order something more powerfull. It is interesting to say that MRS as one SD80ACe testing too. Let's see what they will chose for the ore trains.

Loading gauge template! Haven't seen one used for years!

Fascinating. That doesn't look like the ES58ACi loading gauge though, nor the SD80ACe, unless I'm missing something.

Yes, ES58 is about 1.5 meters longer than a AC44.

That sure looks like an Evolustion Series profile (on right). The ES58 radiator is more peaked - which is the one on the left in the photo.

Very nice. The ES44 and AC44 made in Brazil has a different radiator profile. They are a bit curved as we can see in the pics from Cristiano Oliveira taken in Vale broad gauge system (Carajas rwy).

Looking closer, I think this template is for the ES44ACi design which has a larger dual-fan radiator and air-to-air intercooler design. These units are used on the Rio Tinto line in Australia and are more capable of dealing with the excess heat with the larger radiator core.

The standard ES44AC has a much smaller radiator core than the AC4400CW (due to the 12cyl engine and separate intercooler). Maybe MRS is investigating similar units to get better performance in tunnels? 

841 is a C44-9WM - it is not an Evolution Series radiator

Yes, but this profile with rounded shape is the stardard shape in Brazil even for ES44 because the narrow tunnels and car dumpers.
