Fepasa Chile Brazilian SD40 roster shots
Author: masterphots

As an addition to my post of yesterday,  here are a couple of moving roster shots of Brazilian Progress Rail SD40  No. 3309.  Sorry about the foliage in the second view but it shows the roof profile required by the Chile Rys loading gauge.

Nice unit. It's a pity we could not identify its origin among many Progress Rail former US SD40's that arrived in Brazil.

Was that cut down from a standard SD40-2? Doesn't look like enough radiator area for 3000 hp.

Reportedly.  At 151 tons,  they're Fepasa's heaviest locomotives.

I need to book a flight back to Chile.  Thanks so much for the cool share.

The radiator is indeed smaller, with the third fan handling dynamic brakes from what I can tell (the intakes are the four squares down below at the end of the long hood). The original dynamic brakes are removed with the fans blanked out.

I doubt it can put down the full 3,000hp since the radiator core is so small.

Here you go.  Empties eastbound from the Ventanas smelter.   1/17/19 near Con Con,  Chile

Nice cars. How are they unloaded? Do they dump to the side?

That I don't know as I've never seen the operation at either end.  The tubs arrive from the mine at the rail loadout via truck and are lifted on and off the flat cars by track straddling cranes.
