Angola 2022 Benguela Railway (iv)
Author: GN1969

Some more highlights of the Benguela Railway (Caminho de Ferro de Benguela - CFB) from my recent visit to Angola.

Picture 1: Young boys dream of becoming locomotive engineers in Benguela station. Benguela is the name sake of the railway but is no longer on the main line having been bypassed when the Cubal cut-off was opened in 1974 to bypass the steep grades going east from Benguela up to the Angolan plateau. Picture taken on November 6, 2022.

Picture 2: The interior of the 1920s era dining car stored in Lobito station. Picture taken on November 5, 2022.

Picture 3: A wood-burning Garratt locomotive takes on water and wood in a photo from the early 1970s that I found on FB without a date or photographer credit. Number 341 was built in 1952 by Beyer, Peacock in Manchester, England and was one of 17 supplied to the CFB in 1951/52.

Looks that way...and appears to be a 4-8-2+2-8-4.  That was a pretty common configuration for Garrats in southern Africa.
