In the 1967 six-day war with Egypt,  Israel captured, among other goodies, four EMD locomotives;  three G16s and a G8.  Here are photos of the three G16s.  When I was there, the G8 was in Haifa shops and couldn't be moved outside for a photo.  It was later sold to NRE and ended up in the US.  A day of train chasing on our honeymoon,  and we're still talkin' to each other....lol

Getting three six-year old road units at no cost,  what's not to like.  Plus less available motive power for EGR

Nice G16 units. We have some in Brazil. They belongs to Vale mining.

Can you feel my jelousy seeping through the internet? Holy moly.

In the days following WW1 and prior to Israeli independence, there was through train service from Haifa to Egypt on the Palestine Railway.  That line was severed after independence, but Egypt continued to operate the segment in the Sinai.  Presumably that's where these locomotives were assigned when captured.
