Vale Invests in Railway Decarbonization with the Acquisition of 50 New Locomotives from Wabtec

Contagem, MG – Vale announced this Wednesday (03/26) a strategic agreement with Wabtec Corporation (NYSE:WAB) for the acquisition of 50 state-of-the-art locomotives from the Evolution series. The purchase, which aims to modernize the fleet of the Vitória a Minas Railway (EFVM) and the Carajás Railway (EFC), represents a significant advance in the company's decarbonization program, focused on increasing efficiency and reducing emissions from its railway operations.

The new locomotives will be manufactured at the Wabtec unit located in Contagem, Minas Gerais, boosting the national industry and generating local jobs. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2026.

The fleet renewal plan includes the integration of 36 EVOBBW locomotives into the EFVM and 14 ES58Aci locomotives into the EFC operation. These cutting-edge models stand out for their ability to operate with a higher proportion of biodiesel, which will result in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Vale and Wabtec plan to conduct future tests to assess the feasibility of further increasing this percentage of biofuel.
