Ferronor Chile new operations
Author: masterphots

Ferronor, the freight operator on the meter gauge in northern Chile,  is beginning a new operation, hauling sulphuric acid and copper cathodes from the BHP Escondida mine to the port of Mejillones.  They bought 13 new EMD Indiana GT32ACs and 175 cars from China.  After two years the operation is up and running.  When I was up there in Febuary the acid trains seemed to be in beta testing.  But on February 18, I did chance on a cathode train at the end of the day.  Here are a few images of the train coming down the canyon from La Negra.  This line goes through the city of Antofagasta and the train is allowed as it is not hauling mazmat cargo.   The acid trains will use the FCAB route over Cumbre to the port.
