Ulaanbaatar this afternoon
Author: 86235

Taken on a free day before my Monrailpic Tour begins tomorrow.

1: Half a 2TE116 on the tri-weekly 15:22 Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk (Russia).

2: An elderly Alco-clone TEM2 switcher with mail/ baggage cars

3: A pair of Bryansk-built 2TE25MKs in the yard adjacent to the station. The one on the right was cutting off from the train on which it had just arrived, whilst the other one was heading to the intermodal yard (behind me) from the engine facility. These are the most modern power on the UBTZ (Ulaanbaatar Railway).

Looks like Russian copies of Budd stainless cars behind the power in photo 1.

They're not stainless steel, two tones of grey and red highlights. Like this. They do have a Milwaukee Road look about them though.

Nice shots, Nick!  Always like to see the 5-footers!

I was looking at that city in Google satellite imagery and it looks like a very vibrant railroad industry there. Lots of spurs and industry. One thing that caught me by surprise is all the small intermodal terminals scattered around the city. I counted at least a dozen such facilities.
