In the Shatan Mountains
Author: 86235

Taken today in beautiful conditions about 60 miles north of Ulaanbaatar on the Trans-Mongolian Railway.

1: A northbound container train along the River Kharaa, the locomotive is a Lugansk built 2TE116

2: The 09:35 Ulaanbaatar to Sukhbaatar local, Sukhbaatar is the Mongolian border post with Russia. The loco is an M62, also from the Voroshilovgrad Loco Works in Lugansk.

3: A southbound freight consisting entirely of Russian box cars, the loco is one of the most modern locos in service on the UBTZ, a Bryansk-built 2TE25MK

Beautiful pictures, as always, Nick.  They remind me of Colorado at this time of year.  Are those Aspen trees?  Gerry

Great photos. I was thinking that looked like a older railroad grade and bridge in that first photo;

These are some fantastic shots. I myself really like the first shot. Excellent.   For whatever reason, I always thought that the Aspen was a North American tree only. They are still beautiful this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere.   Thanks for sharing these and congrats on the IOTD. Well deserved. Ben

Unfortunately no new locomotives will be coming out of the Luhansk, Ukraine locomotive plant any time soon.   That operation became a casualty of the original fighting between Russian backed groups and Ukraine and was shut down by 2015 and has apparently been pretty much destroyed.

Loco building in Russia is now concentrated at Bryansk, where the 2TE25s come from.
