Hi, Vale mining is sending all DDM45´s to VLI railroad and then they will be sent to the scrapp yard. About ninne units arrived in Belo Horizonte  and three was sent to Helio Torres yard to be cut. It is the end of an era. It is very sad to see them going to scraping and we can not save at least one.n  All pictures from friend Helton Amaral.

Wow.. that is very sad to see such a unique member of the SD45 family all go to scrap withouit one being saved.  Is there anyone at the railroad's management who would want to see these saved at all? Tragic.

 

I know a big compliant with these units was the rigid 4-axle trucks causing extreme wheel and rail wear; we made at least 3 proposals at EMD to convert these to an articulated B-B truck over the years but the cost was always too high to justify. Were there any other major issues with them?

How much could the scrap value be?  Yuo'd think with the various active railfan groups there,  someone or a few could buy one.  Has anyone asked Vale for a unit to preserve? 

I am a small group of railfans are trying to save one, but these big companies are not not very receptive to the public lacking political or economic clout. The main question is where to put it and how to move it. The cost will be very high, for sure.

The DDM45 are excellent locomotives. Vale still using a few on MoW trains, but they decided they won't be repaired for now one. If it has an issue, it will be scrapped.

those trucks have any parts that dd40x owners need?

Is it known how many of the 83 produced still survive at this point?

Scrapped locomotives are sold based on the weight of the steel, which currently range at 0.097 US dolar per lbs. So,a DDM45 value in the scrapping market is something like U$ 15,500 dolars. It could be nice if an american group buy one and bring it back to US, where they born, because here, I think they won't survive.

The DDM trucks are meter gauge. There are very few parts that would fit a standard gauge DD truck.
