In order to replace Class 80 Ltd Express, 12 cars of Class 183 Ltd Express were introduced in 1979 in Hokkaido Region. In 1981 mass production began. Total 89 cars were added to the roster in two year period.

This particular consist that LesWhite took was a chartered train since it posted “EXTRA” sign at the nose display. Also note that this particular consist has been repainted back to good ole JNR Ltd Express scheme in Nov. 2001 to host Hokkaido’s best 100 photo contest. Since then this has been used as an extra chartered train.

Hope this helps.

Hiroshi
