Railfan resources
Author: rustyr0824

Recently in another thread someone told me about:
http://www.openrailwaymap.org/
But lately it is not showing any railroads, does anyone know why?

Also someone told me about:
http://www.asm.transitdocs.com/
Which is cool for tracking Amtrak movements.

Are others aware of neat little web pages for keeping track of trains?
And is it possible to track a frieght train or is that only restricted to actual customers of the railroad?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Just checked opem railway dot org using Firefox, had to increase the resolution and the RR's show just like last week. It seems to need a fairly tight area to show the details, very different from the Amtrak page.

I've looked at it on multple computers using multiple browsers.  It looks to me that the information regarding highways is highlighted, rather than the railroads.  Last week, IIRC, it was the other way around.  There must be a setting somewhere, but I cannot find it for the life of me.

OK thanks, yeah I tried rebooting and different browers, but nothing helped.
www.openstreetmap.org still works and if you click on the layers icon off to the right then click on the transportation bar it will show you active railroads at 50 miles and closer.
But there is no historical/closed railroads shown.
I did go ahead and email the host for openrailwaymap to see if they have some suggestions as to why no railroad data is being displayed any longer.

Also I guess it's not possible to track freight movements huh.

I did find this link that is pretty interesting showing different railroads and being able to display the map different ways:

I emailed them and got this back.  FYI

Hello, the website is currently moving to a new server. That's why you can seejust the background map at the moment, but not the map overlay which ishighlighting the railroad lines. Also see the announcement on Twitter (https://twitter.com/openrailwaymap/status/815840280301674496) and our mailing list(http://lists.openrailwaymap.org/archives/openrailwaymap/2017-January/000561.html). I think it will take some days until everything is working fine again. This is just a hobby project, so our time to work on the project islimited.  RegardsAlex

Cool, thanks for the feedback.
At least we know now it's not us.

You must be looking for more than I am.
It could also be that I was looking at an older version from a cache or slow serve
