Epson V800 and V850
Author: jbwest

In another thread the Epson V800 and V850 scanners were mentioned in very positive terms. I am curious if there has been any rigorous testing of the 35mm slide and film scanning capability of these machines compared to say the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000. The Nikon machine has been discontinued for years but many still seem to consider it the "consumer" standard for slide scanning. I have a Coolscan and am very pleased with it, but one of these days it will probably crap out and I'm wondering how the V800 and V850 might be as a replacement. I have the much cheaper V600 which I use for 120 negs and am very happy with it, but when I tried doing slides on it the Coolscan was clearly much superior. But the specs for the V800m and V850 seem to be very comparable with the Coolscan, and certainly the price puts it in the same league.

I just read the excerpts from this https://luminous-landscape.com/epson-v850-pro-scanner-context/ and he says the V850 is not as good as the Nikon but pretty darn good up to 11 x 17 print of a scan and you have to pretty much pixel peep to see the difference when comparing. That is the gist I got from reading the excerpts I did not download the 89 page review.
