Railfan Technology > AcmeMapper replacement wanted.Date: 08/06/18 08:20 AcmeMapper replacement wanted. Author: K3HX AcmeMapper has recently changed map engines.
I'd be grateful to know of a mapping program with a Google map engine that has the same functions as AcmeMapper such as being able to assign multiple pushpins and determine angle and distance between them and being able to accept digital lat-long entries. Bing maps do not provide the information I reqire. Either a downloadable program or a purchased disc will do. The latest de Lorme disc I can find is 2015 and it is out of stock. Why would you not want to continue using it?
Read the "About" page for OpenStreetMap... https://www.openstreetmap.org/about Don Strack Date: 08/20/18 21:10 Re: AcmeMapper replacement wanted. Author: K3HX donstrack Wrote:

For example, enter N 40.77021 W 83.82774 into the new version of AcmeMapper. You see a indistinct blob. Looking at a Google map engine version reveals a small endcab switcher, pointed ENE. I now use The Photographer's Ephemeris which has a Google map engine and is capable of resolving the fine detail which I need to determine if it is possible to get a good photo and at what time of year-what time of day. TPE will not currently accept LAT-LON entries and sometimes stumbles with smaller towns. To see the little endcab, enter Ada, Ohio into TPE and note the grain elevator to the west of the pushpin. You need to be in satellite mode. You can just barely see something on the west side of the complex all by itself on a piece of track. Center this in the frame and advance the magnification all the way (CONTROL + SCROLL) to reveal an endcab. TPE has some peculiarities but once you figure them out, work-arounds are possible. My hope was to find a program with the crosshair and multiple pushpin location indicators and enough detail for my use. Really liked the older version of AcmeMapper and used it to make hundreds of location files. I've been able to mostly duplicate the functions using 2 other map programs. It was just a lot easier to use just one. Be Well, Tim Colbert K3HX |
