Railfan Technology > Posting a video testDate: 06/20/20 21:55 Posting a video test Author: oyw I watched #3 make a reverse move into the Riverside depot this morning. They used the air wistle and I thought it would be interesting to post a video. With no idea how to post videos from my phone, I kept punching buttons until I got this far. Seems pretty jerky when I view it here on TO, probably doing something wrong. Suggestions welcome.

That whistle is a real 'Pip-Squeek' ! Good job, and thanks, James R.(Jim) Baker Whittier, CA Date: 06/21/20 19:29 Re: Posting a video test Author: cchan006 oyw Wrote:

Hope you post videos more often. The video played as smooth as others here on TO, occasional jerkiness. I downloaded your video to play it locally on my machine, and it plays smoother. That points to the combination of your video's bandwidth, TO's browser-hosted video player, and user's computer's hardware capability as the cause of jerkiness. Before I upload my videos, I usually reduce the video bandwidth ahead of time, sacrificing resolution (854x480, DVD quality) for smoothness. TO will still "post-process" my video, so the video bandwidth is usually half of what I uploaded, for example 6 Mbps to 3 Mbps. I noticed you uploaded yours at HD (1920x1080), and the video bandwidth ended up being around 4 Mbps. That should be OK for most people. I played the downloaded video on different machines I have, and I noticed the "same" jerkiness, which possibly points to TO's software, but this should be minor, so I wouldn't worry about it. It is kind of a hassle to downgrade the video resolution and bandwidth before you upload, usually requiring a video editor or a filter software, but that's the most effective way to reduce jerkiness. That's based on some tests I did several years ago to try to make my videos more friendly to Mac users, who complained the videos played jerky. Thank you Charles and others, I have cell phone videos from the last several years that need editing, mostly because of lots of dead time in the beginning. I have one in particular in mind that I think many would enjoy. I'll have to play around with it one of these evenings when I'm bored. Bob Date: 07/26/20 22:34 Re: Posting a video test Author: RailRat I videoed the Big Boy last October using my Android phone, only railroad filming I've actually done in a long time.
My video setting was at Ultra HD, which creates a huge file size. There's also Full HD, then HD settings on my phone. Full HD seems to be a happy medium for me, which creates a smaller, but still a huge file. Then there's just HD, which will create the smallest HD video file My Ultra HD 5 minute clips were way too high a MB count to upload to TO or any other site (remember TO limit is about 410MB) and it just kept cycling when trying to upload, then I realized I had to reduce the clips to regular HD, and they uploaded just fine.
