What are the video upload guidelines?
Author: inCHI

I've had no luck uploading videos today, and on some other recent occasions. Uploads progress to a certain percentage, then get stuck.

I realize that uploads get processed for smaller sizes and bitrates. What are the ideal settings for video uploads?

What video size? 1080p, 720p? I've tried both.
What bitrate? I tried something at 15mbps, then 10mbps, then even 6mbps. No luck.

Are there any other parameters to export at?

I had the same problem yesterday.
File was well within the size and time requirements.
A 220 MB wmv file of 3 mins 35 secs.
Stopped at 6% everytime.
Attempted multiple times throughout the day.
Each time left it undisturbed 45" to 90" with same results.

The only requrements I could find on the site are those that
appear when you click on "Attach a file".

me too.  yesterday i was unable to upload a video that was 254 mb and and only 4'.26" in length after a few attempts during the day.

as i remember, the first few times it stopped at 26%.  then next time it stopped at a far less percentage.

it was one of my usual mp4 video files.........

I tried again tonight.
Let it cook for over an hour and it never went beyond 6%

We have been using the same system for several years and to have this happen suddenly and intermittently makes it a tough fix.  The system is timing out before uploads are completed. Sometimes uploads don't get far, other times they make it far.  It leads us to believe it is an issue with our cloud hosting company.  We put a support ticket for them to look at the load balancer as the timeout may be caused on their end.  That failing we'll rewrite the code to bypass it, but that will take a couple of days.   Some videos are getting through and that is a mystery as why some make and some don't.

Just tried uploading the same video twice, 47.8 MB video at ~160 KB/sec, both stopping at 38%. According to network monitoring tools, the actual upload didn't stop at 38% as the data was still being sent. I guess the server stopped responding at 38% (some kind of a timeout) so no acknowledgement even after my video "finished" uploading (data sent per second dropped to zero).

Due to how video is embedded in a post here on TO, I always edit it DVD quality (480p) since only nitpickers will care about how much "better" it looks at higher quality (1080p, 4K, etc.). Bitrate for my video is at 2 Mbps, as there's no perceptible gain in quality at higher bitrates, and there are articles you can research to back this up. I save storage space not just for me, but for TO as well.

For 720p videos, I'd stick to 5-6 Mbps. No recommendations for anything above that - instead, edit your videos to 480p to 720p, and don't waste bandwidth.

Ok folks, we should be fixed now. The problem was with our cloud providers load balancer had a timeout setting of two minutes. That meant your upload had to complete within two minutes or it would fail.  They made a change and our tests indicate it is working now.
