Railfan Technology > Need recommendations: Going from DSLR to Mirrorless CamearsDate: 10/18/24 01:57 Need recommendations: Going from DSLR to Mirrorless Camears Author: DutchDragon I have been using Canon cameras since forever. I started with an AE-1, then a Rebel XT and eventually an 80D. After a number of years, the 80D is starting to get old and have focusing problems. Now I'm looking for a new camera.
The obvious answer is to get a new 90D. With all the new mirrorless cameras that are out there I am thinking maybe I should go to a mirrorless format. The brand name doesn't matter since I will have to buy new lenses regardless. Can anyone provide some recommendations and what type of Mirrorless Body would be good for railfan photography? I still do occassionally. It requires an adapter to make the lens to sensor distances be correct. The older lenses actually work better with the mirrorless. It took a while to get used to the electronic viewfinder but now I'm a convert. Using the 6D feels a little clunky.

The problem with looking at reviews is they are written for people looking at a camera for the first time. I'm sure some TO members have made this transition and I was hoping for some expertise from their experiences. While the M series has been discontinued, you can be up and running with a body and the EOS to EOS-M adapter for around $500. If memory serves correct, there are similarities / commonalities between the 80D and M50.
I needed something smaller than my full-frame Nikons due to space and weight constraints when traveling for business and something better than the Nikon AW-100 I was using as a pocket camera. Over the past six years, I've cobbled together the M50 and M100 bodies, all of the Canon EOS-M lenses except the 32mm, the Sigma 16mm and the Tamron 18-400 (which requires the adapter) via the new, used, and refurbished channels. Overall, I've been very impressed with and pleased by the EOS-M system. Here are a few sample images and my comments on the EOS-M from a post a few years back. https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4911490,4911490#msg-4911490 As they say, "your mileage may vary." If you go down the EOS-M rabbit hole, get an extra battery or two. Good luck with your search and discernment! Feel free to reach out with any questions. And then there are the Buying Guides. It's a great place to START.

It's a great place to START. I have done my basic research and have found there are some things that the reviews just don't explain. Looking at the Canon R10 and R50 for example they have the same specifications. So why is there a $300 difference between the R10 and R50? I agree with you that dpreview is a great place to START. However, I'm beyond that phase and need information you can't easily find by reading reviews. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/20/24 01:36 by DutchDragon. The physical size is the only difference between the two? Date: 10/20/24 05:20 Re: Need recommendations: Going from DSLR to Mirrorless Camears Author: exhaustED DutchDragon Wrote:

Essentially yes, bar some really minor differences e.g. burst frames per second 12 v 15. On dpreview you can open up the full specifications after clicking on the camera photo. I bought adapters for both bodies to continue to use my EF lenses. I've been very happy with the results. I use the R7 for aviation photography and the R for most everything else. The only issue I had was getting a plug in from Adobe to be able to process the R7 images.
