New Railfan Android App seeks Beta Testers
Author: SWMO_Rails

Here’s a little something I’ve been building over the last week:

It’s officially up on the Google Play Store in Beta. Fingers crossed it clears review soon. I priced it at $2.99 since I’ve got over 60 hours and almost $100 in tools wrapped up in it already. I'm not sure if Beta testers are subject to the $2.99 cost or not.

If you would like to be in the beta group, let me know your email via PM.

I’ve also got a local build running on my phone and I’ll be using it this weekend on my trip back to Nebraska. Expect tweaks as I find things to improve.

The biggest missing piece right now is non‑Amtrak train tracking. I’ve reached out to RailState to see what it takes to get access to their API.

More updates coming, including writing for iOS.

The video of the screen is a demo video.
* the first screen is a map of your location and and Amtrak trains within a defined distance. I'm working on getting freight listed but there are no free APIs available anymore.
* Second screen is scanners. The two tabs at the top are for live feeds and a list of that AAR RR channels which also indicate the assigned RR.
* Third screen is a train symbol decoder. You enter the symbol and it will decode it for you.
* Forth screen is a photo page. It has a Sun angle predictor for your location. You can take a cell phone photo via the camera chip and the other chip allows for a loco ID from a cell picture. The other two chips are not active. Below the photo items is an achievement are that you can earn achievements as you use the app.
* Fifth screen is a community page where you can see others entered sightings within a determined distance. The + chip allows you to enter your own sightings.
* Sixth screen is locomotive rosters broken down my model type. The individual RRs are within the locomotive type.
* Seventh screen allows you to save a specific location.
* Eigth screen is the settings page to adjust the various app features.

Are you looking for something specific? This app will have additional features added and adjustments to the existing ones. It's definitely not a static app.

Hi, I'd be happy to beta test it for you but can't find it in the Play store. Can you please send me a message with a link to the app? Thanks!!

Looks promising for sure!

I would love to see this app on iOS (Apple iPhone) at some point.  Is that in the cards?

Also, perhaps you've already done this, but sorting the scanner channels by the user's approximate location according to railroad would be useful as well.

Cheers,
Harry

I'm an android user, and would be happy to beta test the app.  The link above doesn't work in Google Play, and I can't find the app in searches there.

I ended up paying for a company to do the beta testing. This phase is completed and the app is now in Googles approval process for publication. I am hoping for a release day in the next week. Thanks for the interest.
