What is everyone using for photo editing. I heard adobe has went to a yearly subscription

Is there something good that is free ?

Since 2005 when I went digital I've used progressively newer versions of Photoshop Elements. I'm currently on PSE 2022. It's yours once you buy it, no subscription. The newer versions of PSE have 'Guided Edit' that walks you through the steps until you're comfortable enough to do it by yourself in 'Expert' edit. You can usualy buy an older version from Amazon for less than $100. A couple of years ago I up graded from my older DSLRs to mirrorless cameras and the software had an issue with one of my cameras. I called Adobe Tech Support and the guy helped me download a plug in for no charge that worked with the new camera. Like a lot of things different people have differing opinions on different brands of software but I'm still very happy with Photoshop Elements. I'm currently using  Canon R and a R7 cameras. Good hunting!

I'm still using Elements 2021. I also have Premiere 2019 but had to get Adobe's help getting it squared away after Widows 11 put out an update.
Long time ago I had the full Photoshop, but it had so many bells and whistles that I never used or needed I went with Elements. Totally happy with it.

I use Capture One.

It’s great for both editing, and cataloging. Stitches a mean panorama, too.

I run it on a Mac. I think it’s also available in a Windows version.

It’s not free, but then what is?

I’m not a big Adobe fan, although I use Photoshop when needed.
