The Greens of Spring
Author: kgmontreal

After April in Montreal broke records for rainfall, May has had a few warm days that have put the trees in leaf. The countryside is green and lush. Today's QGRY freight on the Lachute sub rolled west from Ste-Therese with 31 cars.

I like your overhead photo. The orange and black in our area is the Ohio Central that comes to interchange with the W&LE in Brewster, Ohio on a couple days a week.

Snappy colour; in your upper photo, what is the parallel rail line on the left?

Would that be a train on the move on the other track are those cars just stored there?

The location is adjacent to the village of Ste-Scholastique near Mirabel.

There's a siding on that track, and that's where I have seen cars stored in the past. Also, ahead of the siding, there's a crossover between the two lines (hidden by the trees).

Those are empty covered hoppers as car supply for the Unimin plant on the Montfort sub. The Unimin plant ships a particular type of mineral that must be kept dry. The QG crews refer to it as "sand". But what exactly it is I don't know. It was being shipped out in pressure unloading truck trailers. Now some is moving by rail again.

QG goes up the Montfort twice a week or so. At times the Lachute sub freight will leave its train east of Ste Scholastique and go up the branch itself. But more often a turn goes up there from Ste Therese on days the Lachute freight doesn't run.
