Thanks for this post. By the way, might you know the schedule for this train's return (eastward) movement, scheduled for July 28 - August 20, 2017?

Where was the 1401 rebuilt and to what extent?

Great coverage; thanks.

It was rebuilt by Relco Locomotives Inc. of Albia, Iowa. As described by Branchline magazine, it is now a GP38-3 in an F-unit carbody.

There's a full-page write-up in the June issue of Trains magazine. Prime mover and alternator are same as those in CP's GP38 types. Electrically, it has been rebuilt to same specs as the GP20C-ECO and SD30C-ECO types, of which CP has 180 combined. The cab layout is identical to that of the GP20C-ECO. One result of this is that this unit will be familiar to many CP engineers and mechanics.

The cab was extended by moving the rear cab wall back by 24 inches, allowing room for two more seats.

It's the first F-unit in North America equipped for PTC. The antennae for that are on the cab roof.

Train is returning from Vancouver on June 24, leaving at 09:00 and overnighting in Revelstoke. Back in Calgary by Sunday evening. You're thinking of another trip, the Canada 150 special.

Very, very classy!

Can anyone confirm if there is a plan to upgrade the other two units?

I do believe there are plans to upgrade 4106/4107 with similar "GP20C-ECO features". These units were re-manufactured by CN in 1985, so they are similar mechanically to a GP38-2. I like cab units, but I question the need to have three units and a B unit

In photo 7, is the inside switch of the crossover reversed, and the main track switch normal?

The bell is up there to keep it out of the ice and snow.

Looks that way...the mainline switch is a power CTC switch, while all the others are handthrow. This is where the CN and SRY (Southern Railway of BC) interchange, at the east end of the SRY. CN used to run a turn to Chilliwack from Thornton yard, last time I was out there all the work at Chilliwack is now done by mainline trains. In this era of monster trains they often leave their train east of town to make their set off, or tie down in the siding at Arnold (6 miles west) and shove back to Chilliwack.

This sounds like both a rules violation, and an invitation to disaster.

Here's another view, lookimg west: https://railfanatlas.com/?x=-121.9513264&y=49.1632227&z=17&p=0&h=0

There is this item in the CN Timetable No. 19, BC South Sub-region, Yale Sub, which may cover the matter. though I am wary of the inside switch being lined to the main, derail notwithstanding. But I'm also many miles from Chilliwack!

4 CHILLIWACK
(a) SPECIAL DERAIL located (50) ft east of Signal
719D.
(b) Switch leading to interchange track at west end
of Track YG01 must not be lined for movement
to or from the SRY Interchange Track YG98 until
permission has been obtained from the RTC. When
the switch is lined for movement to or from the SRY
Interchange Track YG98, Signal 719D will display
a Restricting Signal indication continuously. This
switch must remain lined for the interchange track
while any portion of the movement is occupying
the track between Signal 719D and the Block End
sign located on the interchange track. Movements
from interchange track to Track YG01 must not
pass Block End sign until the hand-operated switch
has been properly lined.
