Moffat Madness
Author: es44fan

Yesterday, I spent the day with a friend from Oregon on the UP Moffat Subdivision. Since the Moffat is a hit or miss line when it comes to trains, traffic was EXCEPTIONAL for a typical day on the Moffat. Six trains, including two coal trains, one grain train, one freight, as well as Amtrak 5 and 6. The weather and lighting even decided to cooperate. We started at Plainview Siding before moving west to Cliff, Tolland, and Rollins to catch a few eastbounds and Amtrak. Afterwards, we followed one of the eastbounds back down through Cliff and Coal Creek Canyon where we would stay for the rest of the afternoon to catch Amtrak 6 and the last eastbound. From there, we followed Amtrak and the final eastbound down to Leyden in the early evening to end a busy day on a beautiful line.

1: UP 6782 leads the westbound CKHEY9-09 up the grade at Plainview Siding.
2: After meeting the westbound coal train at Cliff Siding, UP 2654 leads the eastbound MRONY out of Cliff and down to Denver.
3: Running now four hours late due to traffic congestion, Amtrak 5 races along South Boulder Creek near Tolland, CO.

4: UP 5989 begins its descent down the mountains leading the CWEMS9-12 out of Tolland Siding and along South Boulder Creek.
5: UP 6782 and its crew sit patiently and watch as UP 5989 passes through Rollins Siding continuing east.
6: Thunderstorms start to appear as UP 5989 crosses over the South Boulder Creek approaching Cliff Siding.

7: After being pounded by a thunderstorm, the sun returns along the Rocky Mountains as the CWEMS9-12 snakes around Coal Creek Canyon by Blue Mountain Rd.
8: Amtrak 6 descends from Tunnel 1 in the evening sunlight running about 30 minutes late.
9: After a two hour wait for a new crew, UP 8627 and the GSKIAK-10 departs Eisele Siding and descends Big Ten Curve towards Denver.

There's more...

10: Now running an hour late and back on green signals after the delayed grain train, Amtrak 6 races east along the countryside near Leyden.
11: Only a few minutes after Amtrak passed, the GSKIAK-10 with UP 8627 rounds the curve at east Leyden in the setting sun.

Thanks for looking!!

Those are all beautiful, beautiful photos, sir!
Almost every single one of them should be IOTD.
Love the composition in #6 and 37, but all are
stunning. Thanks so much for taking these great
photos and posting them here.

You do have an artist's eye.

Wow what a great day, those pictures are great. Glad you had such a great time on the eastside of the line. I am going in September hope for some good action then too.

Excellent!
My favorite is the meet at Rollins: the curves, the crew, the anticipation, the difference in superelevation between the main line and siding, and the lighting.
A close second is No. 6 curving far above Denver, with thunderstorms out over the plains, but they are all "keepers".
Thanks for sharing.

Great series of photos! Nothing like having some luck with traffic when you're out shooting...

Beautiful shots. Great work of landscape and trains in less than perfect weather and really a bonus day for trains.

These run the gamut: sunny shots, cloudy shots, weird-hazy-light shots; wedgies, landscapes; color, black and white. And it's all excellent. Thanks for sharing.

The examples here are why I became a D&RGW fan back in the 1980's. Superb word class scenery!

I miss the Rio Grande but the landscape remains timelessly beautiful. At least the rails still have trains!

Cheers, Jim
