Eastern Railroad Discussion > Southern Style Winter WonderDate: 12/10/17 12:08 Southern Style Winter Wonder Author: NSSpike Headed out around 10:30 am Friday morning with plans to catch a few trains as the wintry mix began to ascended on the west Georgia area. I had missed the early morning east bounders as the snow didn't really start until around 9:30 here in Villa Rica Georgia. Only trains running was a west bound manifest and an east bound local. By 12:15 it really was coming down and since I don't have 4 wheel drive I headed home. In my 38 years living in west Georgia we have never seen so much snow! We got about 11” at our house.
#1. NS 187 ( MACON, GA – BIRMINGHAM, ALA) west bound just past CP Baggett @ MP 668.5 Alabama East End District Villa Rica Georgia. #2. About an hour and 15 minutes with snow coming down big time NS A25 Douglasville Georgia local heading east to the depot with a cut of cars they picked up in Bremen Georgia. ..more to follow. Phil Maton Villa Rica, GA Date: 12/10/17 12:10 Re: Southern Style Winter Wonder Author: NSSpike Early Saturday morning the snow had stopped and by 9am and a clear blue sky arrived. Waited until after lunch to see what I might be able to catch running between Atlanta and Birmingham on the East End District. NOT much. AMTK 19 was already a tad over 2 hours late into Atlanta. NS 220 had just run by and was holding on the main at Baggett. On the way east I pulled off the road into a known paved shoulder to respond to a half dozen text messages. Big mistake. Luckily a good fellow happened by and pulled me out of the mess I was in. I had to pass on a snow shot of 220 with 3 Belle units at Baggett as there was no safe place to pull over. A HERZOG ballast train was tied down as of yesterday in the siding at Winston. Utility power out everywhere. Trees over the tracks. System in Code Failure. Crews having to hand line switches. Between CP Carroll and CP Bridge just north of Inman Yard things were at a stand still.
After AMTK 19 finally got on the move and made it to Villa Rica around 2:30 pm eastern a couple of east bounders were in the picture. Finding a safe place to park was my biggest challenge. End up going to one of my usual spots in downtown Villa Rice after I managed a shot of the ballast train. See this thread on AMTK 19 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,4434473 #3 NS 935 tied down in the siding at Winston Georgia. Maintenance of Way was trying to get track time as a few trees had fallen onto the cars mid train. #4 NS 226 (LOS ANGELES, CA (UP ZLCAI) - ATLANTA, GA) that hit a tree west of Temple Georgia finally makes it into Villa Rica Georgia at MP 669.8. #5 NS 290 (MCCALLA, AL - CROXTON, NJ) with a single leader NS #9799 east bound at CP Villa Rica MP 669.8.
