Western Railroad Discussion > Clearing the Snow on the BNSF Chicago Sub

Starting on Thursday evening, 2/9/18, the Chicago region was hit with a sizeable snowstorm. I took advantage of being able to work from home and avoided going downtown on Friday. After clearing the driveway of just over 8” of the white stuff and getting some work done, I headed over the BNSF Chicago Sub to see what was running.
1. First up was a Metra train making its station stop at Clarendon Hills led by Metra 179.
2-3. Amtrak 78 with the California Zephyr busting the snow pile left by the local street department on Main 2. I almost didn’t turn fast enough to avoid the flying snow.

4. Next the eastbound California Zephyr clears Main 3. This time I parked myself far enough away that most of the snow missed. The nice Audi SUV in the first space next to the tracks wasn’t as lucky.
5. Over in Hinsdale, Amtrak 51 leads the eastbound Southwest Chief past the station.
6. BNSF 5830 leads a westbound empty coal train

7. An eastbound Metra commuter train pushed by a recently rebuilt F40PH-3M #200 at Hinsdale
8. Metra 183 slowing for its stop at the Hinsdale station
9. Amtrak 196 with the westbound Southwest Chief proof that every once in a while, Amtrak can get the all four of the long distance trains on this line in and out of Chicago close to on time.

10-11. Last train of the afternoon was the westbound HBRCGAL (Belt Railway to Galesburg) led by BNSF 4180 and 4717

Every photo in your series is excellent!

NICE photos! I especially like the ones of the train busting the snow -- VERY well done! I like all of them. Man that does look COLD out there!

Great snow plow shots. Good catch on the Santa Fe paint engine. Amazing what can be done with 8 inches of snow.

There are least five of the latest rebuilds on the BNSF currently so one stands a good chance of catching one. That will increase as the old F40PH-2M's are cycled through the rebuild process.

Me too, that's why I live in Westmont! My sister-in-law lives in Clarendon Hills and her property tax bill is about 80% of my yearly mortgage payments.
