Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS 4000 across North Alabama on ThursdayDate: 05/17/19 08:03 NS 4000 across North Alabama on Thursday Author: WSOR506 On Thursday, NS train 201 (Rutherford, PA to Rossville, TN Intermodal) was led by AC44C6M #4000. In 2015, NS rebuilt 2 D9-40C's and converted them to AC traction, numbering them 4000 & 4001. The 4001 was damaged in a derailment and is being repaired but will likely return in NS black paint. This leaves the 4000 as the only unit on the NS roster in this unique Blue/Grey scheme.
By the time 201 left Sheffield Yard in Muscle Shoals, AL, the clouds had moved in. I did manage to get a couple decent shots as the sun popped out. First, at Pride, AL local A87 is in the siding as 201 passes. Second, at MP 440 west of Iuka, MS. My DeLorme Mississippi Atlas identifies this location as Hazard Switch. Does this train still operate from Rutherford, PA to Rossville, TN?
Thank you in advance. Date: 05/17/19 09:31 Re: NS 4000 across North Alabama on Thursday Author: ns1000 Yes...

The ex-SOU route, now the NS Memphis East End and West End Districts, dip down into Alabama. Chattanooga, TN - Huntsville, AL - Sheffield, AL - Corinth, MS - Memphis, TN Andrew Date: 05/17/19 13:58 Re: NS 4000 across North Alabama on Thursday Author: highgreengraphics Great shots Rich! === === = === JLH
Date: 05/17/19 14:03 Re: NS 4000 across North Alabama on Thursday Author: ctillnc Terrain was easiest along the Tennessee River between Chattanooga and the Mississippi-Alabama border, so the line was built through north Alabama. Actually the line also dips into Georgia.
The Memphis & Charleston was completed between Memphis and Stevenson, Ala in 1858. It opened traffic between the Mississippi River at Memphis and the Atlantic Ocean at Savannah or Charleston. The trackage rights deal struck between the M&C and the Nashville & Chattanooga for Stevenson-Chattanooga remains in effect today; NS runs over CSX for that stretch.
