Corn, harvesting and a sunset
Author: Q4960

Today (Friday October 15, 2019) was much better weatherwise than the last time I had gone along the BNSF's Chilli Sub to photograph trains!  Instead of snow and blowing snow the temperature was warmer and the sky was blue.  Many of the farmers were in the fields harvesting what corn remained.  The first photo is of a westbound running wrong main between Toluca and Ancona, Illinois (the area where all the photos were taken), passing soon to be harvested corn.  I observed the light clouds in the sky and deducted that there might be a decent sunset.  In the second photo an eastbound passes through Ancona.  I liked the effect with the clouds and sun but the color was lacking.  I reasoned that I had one more eastbound and decided to head west for a final shot.  As I turned south on a county road I saw the train passing in front of me a mile or so away.  But then I saw an opportunity IF that eastbound had a DPU.  I set up with the tractor and wagon and waited, and was not disappointed.  I went down to the tracks and crossed them and got photos of what was to become a pretty nice sunset.  And then I saw the glow of a headlight...

The local arrived just in time, and had two Warbonnets trailing.  Not a bad afternoon for railfanning!

No doubt that number four is the cat's meow, but
inspect number two and marvel at the detail
brought out of the depths of the shadow detail
in the original.

We've got a skilled photographer using his tools to
both his limits and the limits of the base image.

Thanks for being there with your trusty camera :-)

John.

Great IOTD shot! And I really like #3. It speaks volumes about that certain autumn morning where that certain nip in the air tells us that winter's coming ain't no joke!
Great stuff, Roger!
