Western Railroad Discussion > Donner snow dayDate: 03/25/20 17:45 Donner snow day Author: Midnight_Goat Well, actually four snow days. Lately I have been going through some of my Donner Pass photos, I selected four to share here. The four photos were all taken on different days, although three from the same trip. As a side note the first photo was taken during my first Donner snow trip back in 2010, that first trip was fairly basic but the seeds had been planted. A few years later (in 2015) a good friend introduced me to snow shoes and then I was really hooked. The last three photos were taken during a January 2017 trip to Donner, which as of this moment, was my last visit.
1) As an eastbound Roseville, California to North Platte, Nebraska manifest continues its climb up one track it is moments from meeting a westbound North Platte, Nebraska to Oakland, California Z train dropping down grade on two track. This scene was recorded at Soda Springs, California just a few miles below the summit of Southern Pacific's famed crossing of the Sierra Nevada. (02.28.2010) 2) On January 12th, 2017 Union Pacific's Sierra snow fighters use spreader set 4032/4031 to clear snow off the balloon trackage in Truckee, California as the westbound ZG2OA, in the background, heads for higher elevations. 3) Having just emerged from the 'big hole' (tunnel 41) a westbound Union Pacific Z train emerges from the fog and into the sunshine as it approaches the Norden shed on January 15th, 2017. Hidden by the thick shroud is Mt. Judah, which ordinarily dominates the background. And one more to follow... Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/25/20 19:41 by Midnight_Goat. Date: 03/25/20 17:45 Re: Donner snow day Author: Midnight_Goat 4) Throttling out of town to the beat of non turbo-ed 645s and passing the icicle clad eaves of the old Truckee depot, a westbound flanger is making a 'Fulda flip'. (01.16.2017)

Thanks for posting. Randy Lundgren Elgin, TX Date: 03/26/20 11:39 Re: Donner snow day Author: PRR1361 Great photos; happy memories from an east coaster who has visited the Donner-Truckee area twice, once with Stein. Nice to see that at least one railroad takes pride in keeping its locos clean and shiny, not like NS's collection of grimesters.
Date: 03/26/20 11:40 Re: Donner snow day Author: ironmtn Outstanding series! Number 3 is my pick -- great use of light, contrast and shadow, but they're all excellent. Impressive view of the spreader in number 2, and very deserving of IOTD -- congratulations!. I don't think I've seen a view like that of a spreader in service. It really shows the capabilities and engineering quite well. Many thanks!
