Western Railroad Discussion > Cabn FeverDate: 03/26/20 15:48 Cabn Fever Author: mojaveflyer Tuesday afternoon as I got off from work a case of "Cabin Fever" hit me and I decided to grab my camera bag and do some photography. I checked and learned Amtrak #6 was on time so I headed out west. I went up to where the Union Pacific track comes out of the mountain onto the plains of the east. A bonus was that as I left where I shot the photos of #6 and heard another train coming behind it. I headed down to the east switch of Leyden siding, the first siding west of Denver, to grab a shot of the following freight train.
Photo #1- Rounding the "Big 10" curves reverses direction as it drops down the hill. In the background are old hopper cars, filled with rock that form a wind break to protect trains on the edge of the hillside from the fierce winds that sometimes blow in this area. Photo #2- Amtrak #6 is running along the Rocky Siding with some cattle on the hillside above it. I heard the engine crew call back to the train crew that back around the curve was a large herd of elk. Photo #3- Here #6 is crossing the east switch of Rocky siding as it works it's way east. The sign to the right informs the crews westbound they should change to radio channel "2323" and the tones used to ring up the dispatcher. I was feeling better but I also shot the freight behind #6, adding to my wellness.... More in Part II. Here it's crossing the east switch of Leyden siding. Leyden is the first siding west of Denver on the Moffat Tunnel line west of Denver.
Photo #5- The second unit in the loco consist is Canadian Pacific CP 8522. Photo #6- As the train heads toward Denver from Leyden you can see the skyline of Denver in the distance. The grade crossing visible in the distance is the Simms Street crossing... Two days after I shot these our Governor estentially made railfanning illegal (paraphrasing another photographer who posts here and lives in Colorado). Thanks for looking!
