C840-18 at West Fork trestle
Author: Asheville_G

C840-18 soars over the valley below on the West Fork trestle along the former C&O EB&V between Martin, KY and Deane, KY on a frigid MLK day.  A good eye can easily spot the "Chesapeake and Ohio" that still adorns the bridge.

Very nice!  I like how we can see the terrain through the leafless trees.  Nice benefit of winter photography.

Great photo! I love shots like this! In looking at the area on Google Maps, I noticed what looks like a coal facility in Deane. Is it still active?

Kim,

The facility at Deane is no longer active (I believe it’s called Rapid Loader).

Neither is the facility just RR east (north) of here at Bates Branch in Kite proper. Continue the follow the tracks to Deane, and Isom and eventually Hazard and you will pass a multitude of loaders that are abandoned.

I used to work the E&BV....back when there was business.....been over that bridge many times...and worked Rapid Load, Sunny Knott, Bates Branch, Sapphire....and a number of others that I am sure they are all idle now.
