And good use of the proper "Sierra", not "Sierras".

Nice picture and such an apt phrase that fits Donner as well as Colorado. In 2001 I left Amtrak for an opportunity at Metrolink in SoCal.  Before I left I resolved to take one more head end trip up the coast on 14 and over the Sierra on 6.  The trip on 6 had a DRGW GP35 on the point due to a failed Amtrak unit.  There is nothing like being on the head end to appreciate the efforts that went into building the railroad over the Sierra not around them. A sentimental trip I will never forget.

Nice and appropriate.
There was going to be a question about the lot being for sale on the left edge, but then I saw the two houses in the background.

Yeah, oddly enough a (somewhat) gated neighborhood has take root on top of that ridge. Sure didn’t see THAT coming!

There goes the neighborhood.
Hopefully not the access though. I did see some major leagure gates in that area a few years ago.

Excellent work, drone man, SR! And, agreed, the singular “Sierra” is what I expect to read from a MT man like you who lives there 👍👍

Yes it works. Thank you for the fabulous drone angle at Gorge for a high value target!

You're telling me!

And great catch, it'll come and go from Lathrop in darkness (which is the closest I could see it).

The phrase of the thread title has been in use for awhile in various forms. A two-page photo in Donald Duke's 1962 book "Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives" is titled "Through the Tehachapis .... Not Around Them."

(or the last word in the two-page photo title may be " ' Em," not "Them." Unfortunately, I couldn't find my copy of the book)

One of the things I learned as an apprentice typographer, back when they taught such things.
