Western Railroad Discussion > 45 minutes worth at SummitDate: 01/17/22 09:46 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: oyw With mostly cloudy weather predicted for this weekend but hoping for a break, I set course for Cajon Pass early Sunday morning. Looking up toward the Pass, I was pleasantly surprised to see that break I was hoping for.
1) After a quick stop at Verdemont for a going-away shot of Amtrak #3, I made my way up to Summit. Arriving just before 8AM, I wanted to make use of the snow capped backdrop before all the white stuff melted away, so I set up at the Summit road crossing for the following series. Sorry for the redundancy. 2) By 8:15 I had my first westbound, BNSF 7548 leading a loaded ethanol train seen crossing from Main 3 to Main 2. 3) The rear DP was BNSF 8262 and old Warbonnet 788 facing out. Date: 01/17/22 09:48 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: oyw 4) Not exactly pristine, still the 788 made for a nice telephoto shot beneath the mountains.
5) At 8:46, a BNSF manifest with a pair of UP engines heads west. 6) After waiting for the westbound, a four unit set of Yermo bound UP light engines crossed from Main 3 to Track 2 at 8:53AM. Date: 01/17/22 09:50 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: oyw 7) Six minutes later, Tier-4 EMD 3085 was on the point of an eastbound UP manifest.
8) UP 3085 was still passing when BNSF 8247W, with two NS GE’s, began its descent from Summit. The clouds were not far off so I too, made my descent for home. Not counting Amtrak, five movements in 45 minutes wasn’t too bad. Thanks for taking the time to look. OYW Date: 01/17/22 10:00 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: Ritzville Very NICE series! Reminds me of the 1990's with lots of traffic.

Date: 01/17/22 12:25 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: tehachcond Great set of shots. From your shooting location, I'm assuming that the crossing is open again, and that the rent-a-cops are gone?
Brian Black Castle Rock, CO Date: 01/17/22 12:55 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: TheNavigator Time well spent! Been hoping there would be another snow event by now, but it hasn't happened yet.

John Date: 01/20/22 13:34 Re: 45 minutes worth at Summit Author: srman That is a beautiful image and I'm so glad that you could still catch a warbonnet no matter how worn it is. I live in the east and I'll never forget my first time visting that area in June 1995 standing pretty at the same spot. Congradulations having IOTD!
