East portal of Tunnel 15 on the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railroad, abandoned after the mountain slid AGAIN while the concrete was curing. I would have liked to have seen the foreman's expression when he saw THIS one morning! Not long after this happened, they started working on that now-famous Goat Canyon Trestle.

Thanks to Jim and Dave for providing a sense of scale for all those splintered timbers.

Nowadays, you might note that "someone" (presumably some university) has a "strain gauge" installed in there. It's not noticeable unless you're really looking for it... BTW, ANYTIME I enter that portal, I say my prayers first and then enter CAUTIOUSLY!! (can you tell I'm a big chicken?)

I would also bet that they did not have a convergence meter showing the down pressure on the tunnel roof
as well :^) mtararat

Please note that this photo is over 25 years old, and does not refer to any problems with the current work being done to reopen the line this year.

Nearly 26 years ago, and I feel every one of 'em!

Indeed, this does not reflect at all on the present effort to reopen the line. Sorry if anyone thought that.
