Too bad...... It's a waist of perfectly good grafitti. Now the car will probably get fixed and repainted with ONLY railraod paint.

OOOOOhhh the sadness! Now those vandiles will have nothing to show for their efforts.
Keep Paintin' those cars, boys!

I remember reading about it a while back, but I have since forgotten...
How does this happen? How do you "vent" the car? And what does it carry?
Thanks.

"Don't even ask me which Fortune 500 Company had this occur, I can't tell you. It was part of the agreement I made to get the these pictures. These are not public domain, and may not be used beyond looking at the webpage in which they were originally displayed."

Charles - This is a direct quote from the webpage these two photos were lifted from. What part isn't understood?

What happened is that the tank car was steam cleaned, and then buttoned up. After cleaning, its suppose to stay vented so that as the temp cools, the pressure remains the same until completely cooled. As the air cools, the inside pressure dropped causing it to cave it. Its 108am here, and I am sure a more scientic explanition will come. Time for bed!

I deleted the images. They were sent to me by someone else many months ago, so I had no idea where they can from. There is no identifing marks in the photos.

And since you decided to berate me in public, I am responding in kind. All you had to do was send me a private e-mail, and I would have removed them. My e-mail address is on file here on Trainorders. I think that you drisplayed very poor taste in making this public.

chessie - a statement like that on the originator's web site means nothing. Once it's on the web, it's for all practical purposes in the public domain. If you don't want a photo available to potentially everyone in the world, you don't post it on a public page. If you want a photo to be posted but not really useful, you merge a complex semi-transparent watermark into it (like the NY Times historical photos-for-sale site) or you make it so low resolution you can hardly tell what you are looking at (like a certain defence electronics manufacturer's site). In addition, this photo looks like it could have been taken off-property. There is a nearly identical location near where I live, where the car rebuilder's storage tracks are between the facility and a CN spur, and a weed-ridden fence separates the two. The spur runs immediately adjacent to a bike path, which edges on the spur's ties.

Having ran a Tankcar Washing and Repair Facility, sealing the car after steam cleaning did not damage this car. We washed all of our at 210 Degrees, used a vaccum system to remove the residue from the car. Cooled the car to around 160 degrees and sealed it for shipment.

What happened here is the Vacuum Relief Valve in the Manway failed to operate. Every tankcar is equiped with a Pressure Relief Valve (This Car had two) and a Vacuum Relief Valve. With the Vacuum Relief Valve inoperative and the Manway closed, once the Unloading Valve was opened and Gravity or the Pump took over there was no stopping this.

Can the damage be reversed by simply pressurizing the tank and popping it back out?

Oh man did i start a stir, I dont know what webpage you are reffering to, and i assure you I took this photo myself. This is not on a car rebuilders property its on an abandoned spur between two warehouses that the Minnesota Comercial uses to store deadline cars. Its easily acceable, in fact my car is 20' away in a parking lot that has no fence or gated entrence, further more a road dead ends into the spur about 40 yards from the locatoion. For all intenitive puposes it is a public place. Also on the line are old milwaukee road plug door cars, a old BN 40 footer and a BN refer all those cars have the reporting mark crossed out. The tank car is samwiched in between these cars so i can only assume it will stay there and not be fixed. If you have found a image that looks exactaly the same its quite possible that whatever corprate photographer took the shot took it in the exact same place I did.

Thanks to everyone else who backed me up and dident assume im trying to break the law.

Brad - My comments had nothing to do with the image you posted. My comments were to Charles, and to his credit he took down the two images he had posted. The quote I posted above are from the same webpage as the two images he had posted (now removed). I believe him when he says the images were forwarded to him, and I don't believe he had any malicious intent in posting them. My point is that there is very little regard on the Internet for the copyrighted work of others. Again, I don't feel most people have malicious reasons for reposting the creations of others, but we often don't do our homework regarding the origin of such images and if in doubt as to their intended use, the right course of action would be not to repost them.

I have thousands of RR images from days past, many of which would undoubtedly be of interest to historians and modelers that frequent this site and others. I shot a lot of freight cars and other stuff that many chose not to turn their cameras upon. However, I think you can guess why I hesitate to share my work on the Internet.

I also had something published a number of years ago (in a magazine) that is now floating around the Internet with someone else attempting to take credit for my work. I've been trying to track the person(s) responsible down and will be taking civil action against them if/when I do find them. I know how I feel about my copyrighted work being used/abused without my permission, and I feel we should all be "doing the right thing" when it comes to reposting the work of others. Charles, I hope you understand this wasn't a personal thing against you specifically.

I'm surprised that the car can't take the partial vacuum. Perfect vacuum would subject the car to no more than 14.7 PSI; this was probably far, far less. Oh well, live and learn.

relax. chill pill. mellow. never take the internet that seriously. regarding pictures, posting pictures, pictures being posted etc.

I firgure, once u post something on the net, you lose all rights (even tho you shouldnt loose yer rights), its to unregulated, still to new, to hard to crack down on all those who need to be cracked down on, so why waste your life tracking down who stole yer picture.

but i do understand yer points.

thanks for the original poster, for the pic and his testamony to his doing nothing wrong. thanks for sharing this awesome pic.
