NS Trackage Rights Train Derails on CPR Freight Main

A southbound Norfolk Southern train derailed on trackage owned by Canadian Pacific Railway near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon.

According to reports, the train, NS symbol 30T, experienced an undesired emergency brake application at approximately 15:30 EST Friday. Upon inspection, the crew discovered that a dozen freight cars had left the rails in a zig-zag pattern. None of the derailed cars contained hazardous materials and no injuries were reported. The 55-car train was headed from Binghamton, New York to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at the time of the derailment.

According to the Plains Township Fire Department, the railroad crossings at Union Street and at First Street remained closed Friday night, and traffic was diverted to North Main Street.

Clean-up crews from Hulcher Wrecking Services in Gettysburg, PA and from Winters Wrecking Services of Albany, New York, were called in to assist in the cleanup.

CPR officials say that some freight traffic is being detoured to Norfolk Southern's Buffalo Line to Buffalo, New York, where it will be routed accordingly - either into Canada or eastward over the NS Southern Tier Line to Binghamton. CPR also estimates that the line should be reopened sometime Saturday afternoon.
