Norfolk Southern Railroad is preparing to announce a new intermodal terminal and double-stack container route in Virginia's Roanoke Valley.

According to WDBJ-7 News in Virginia, the announcement will specifically target a new terminal to ease highway truck congestion on the parallel Interstate 81 in the western half of the state.

Part of the Heartland Corridor project, Norfolk Southern says that it will increase tunnel clearances in western Virginia and other states to allow trains to carry double-stacked containers. The terminal will be used to transfer those containers from trucks to rail and is expected to generate many new jobs.
