NS Western PA Derailment Dumps Locos, 29 Cars

As many as thirty loaded gypsum hoppers and two locomotives derailed on Norfolk Southern trackage just after 00:30 EST Wednesday morning in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

The derailment was reported just shy of a signal bridge at Saddler's Crossing Road in Hempfield Township. The train consisted of two locomotives leading fifty-nine loaded hoppers and trailed by another pair of helper locomotives on its way from Huff, Pennsylvania to Ohio. The lead locomotives, C40-9W 9344 and an unidentified SD60 and thirty trailing cars were all derailed. The locomotives remained mostly upright, while the train derailed in a zig-zag manner.

There were luckily no injuries to the crew aboard the train and no residential evacuations were necessary because the train was carrying gypsum, which is not considered hazardous.

Cleanup is expected to last for about 24 hours.
