Nissan closing its Headquarters in Gardena California
Author: Detector

I was watching Kcal 9 news today and I heard that Nissan will close its headquarters in Gardena, relocate it to Memphis Tennesse, and some 1,500 workers will lose their jobs. How many Autorack trains a day does UP run with Nissan cars/parts headed for Gardena? Thank you for your time and information. Detector out

Yes and they blamed it all on the "Governator" flubbing a deal with Nissan.
I don't know whether its true or not, but Arnold is really having a BAD week!!!

None. The Torrance Industrial Lead doesn't see any autorack business, and doesn't serve the Nissan HQ. Usually, 'headquarters' in the South Bay are only administrative and R&D centers. Very little actual assembly goes on here. If you look on google maps, you'll see that the Nissan facility is actually on the other side of a 'river' (as we jokingly call them here) and the 110 freeway from the Torrance lead. (Nissan facility is at 18501 S Figueroa St)

Yeah, tell that to NBC 4 since during their 1 minute blurb about it at 11 PM all they showed were car frames being asembled, good chace they wern't even Nissans.

Hi!

No, California is having a bad week. The purpose of the initiatives was to break the stranglehold of the power brokers in Sacramento who are driving businesses out of the state. No better proof than a business leaving that the state is in big doo doo, and that the initiatives should have passed.

The genius of the American system is that the states are like water tight compartments on a ship. One can flood, and there are lots left to keep the ship afloat.

Looks like it was something that was going to happen, no matter what California or the Gov did. Afterall Nissan has an assembly and a parts plant in Tennessee and an assembly plant in Mississippi. Costs, both for the company and employees, are a lot lower in Tennessee than California. By the way, the location is a bit south of Nashville, not in Memphis.

Thats what happens when you count on the main stream media for your news. It does bring up a question from an outsider. The people of California elected Arnold based on what he said that he wanted to accomplish. How come they refused to give him the tools he needs to break through the status quo and bring about the change they thought they wanted?

I am reminded of the phrase "California is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there".

Keep this topic on trains and not on politics.

Going to be interesting. Wonder how many and who the company wants to take back to Tennessee and how many and who actually ends up going.

When this happened with several of the aerospace companies, most of the desired employees decided not to go.

Much as the Nashville might be a nice place if you like real winters, humid summers and hunting and fishing, none of which are in great supply in SoCal, last time I checked the ratio of beach bunnies to beaches in Nashville was listed with an asterisk noting unable to measure.

It was administrative ofices, not manufacturing - so it's got little railroad impact.

http://money.cnn.com/best/bplive/snapshots/40430.html

You can look up Torrance and Nashville on this site, getting some "numbers" ideas about costs. Obviously these are snapshots but look at home prices - and that will give a very quick idea why it's cheaper to locate businesses in a wide variety of other places.

No politics? What, are you planning to drop the Amtrak forum?

The Governor talked to them for ten minutes...they wanted lower workmens comp rates, and some other tax benefits that California can't meet because it is still hemorraging cash. The word is that Toyota is looking to move too. (Since Nissan is number 2 among the Imports, any advantage they gain Toyota will be looking at hard)

In a decade or so, look for the Southeast to be the center of automobile production in the US. However it will have a distinctively foreign slant to it.

Whats the big deal? So another set of high paying jobs gets "cornbelted". Join the club.

The only good thing is they'll be dealing with CSX now, and thats gonna be worse than dealing with California politicians.

Absolutely. After all, when the last of tobacco goes away, what will those happy-to-be-paid-27%-below-the-national-average Tenneseeans be doing?

How about that! Our own little slice of Mexico right here in these United States!
