Got Acid?
Author: GrandeGold

Union Pacific's UGDEO sulphuric acid train rolls into North Yard in Salt Lake City for a crew change. One of my all time favorite unit trains.

Nice shots James! Question, where does this train run to and from? Looks like a pretty nifty train to catch.

What was the number on the placards?

The train runs from Kennecott Copper's smelter at Garfield to a fertilizer manufacturer near Pocatello, Idaho. Really a neat train that takes the scenic Ogden Sub through the Bear River Gorge.

Nice catch. Looks like the 13000 gallon tank car type Athearn makes in HO. How long does this train usually get?

According to the 2012 ERG, it could be 1830, 1831, or 1832 depending on concentration among other things. Plain old sulfuric or sulphuric acid is 1830.

It's the train that you hope doesn't derail when your Front Runner train is next to it going into Clinton....

Nice duo James. Looks like snow showers are imminent in the Wasatch range. Thanks for sharing.

Is there a speed restriction on this train? It seems to run slower than the others between SLC and Ogden.

The fertilizer manufacturer is Agrium, Inc. at Epco, ID= EO. Nice shot of downtown and the mountains!

Utah Railway #2008 in non-GWI paint was also sandwiched between a couple UP diesels on one of the trains going north not long after the train in your shot went by. Headed out for a rebuild, perhaps?

Those tank trains are pretty neat. We have a dedicated train that carries tank cars of hot molten sulfur. Two locomotives leading and two pushing. One of my favorite trains.

Short and heavy, ought to be a fun train to run!

Fuming sulphuric acid. In this concentration, it doesn't attack steel, so the cars would be unlined. 1827 is "spent sulphuric acid", unless there have been changes to the numbers. H2SO4 is known as "the king of the chemicals" because it's used in so many manufacturing processes, including cloth for clothing.

Probably a 30 mph one, which is typical for heavily populated areas.

Probably so, Chris. Sad. Now we're down to one GP38-2 in red and gray paint, the UTAH 2000.
