Golden Evening On The BNSF Seattle Sub

Steilacoom style.

1) Amtrak #14 a few minutes before sunset.

2) I was there in anticipation of a fantastic sunset. It turned out to be less than stunning, and of course while in it's glory, no trains. So this kayaker had to fill in, at less than a horsepower.

3) Video of a Southbound UP Stack train just before Sunset.

4) About a half hour after sunset, as the colors were fading, a south bound announced itself over the 10.1 detector. Since I was passing Bridge 14 on my way home, it seemed like the thing to do, to stop and shoot whatever appeared. Another stack train, this one from the host railroad.

Love the photos and the video! Is the horn heard in the video coming from the crossing gates? Bizarre!

I believe so. In many places there are loud arguments over whether to put in a quiet zone or not: "Quiet zones kill people!", says one group. "Trains kill people through lack of sleep!", say the others. This is a sort of compromise. The electronic horns aren't nearly as loud.

Yes, it's one of two "quiet crossings" in Steilacoom. The other one is at a park about 3/4 mile north. That one is not very useful when the park is busy, as it is a pedestrian crossing and the peds, frequently ignore the horn and the engineers lay on theirs.
