New ARMNs on the big curve at East Portland
Author: 494

Yesterday i posted a photo of a GMP1IV crossing the Steel Bridge & heading South on the UP's Brooklyn Sub.  Well one move ahead of them was the Lake Transfer seen below rounding the curve at East Portland in the opposite direction towards Albina...

One of the familiar aspects of the Lake Transfer's train build are new cars out of Gunderson's Portland location adjacent to Lake Yard.  Shown below, brand new #'s 170411, 170414 & 170413...wonder what happened to 170412?

In addition to the photos from yesterday, here is another example with new Cryo-Trans #5932 at the head end of a Lake Transfer back in February while i was wating for  #516 out of PDX.

Excellent Shots. But I can't help but think that these cars are just new "canvas" for all those ignorant graffiti artists. You know the r
ailroad thinks this too. Look how high on the car the reporting marks are.

You have to wonder why the railroad doesn't have them painted with some anti-graffitti clear coat.
Makes spray paint come off with just a pressure washer.

I've also wondered the same.  There's got to be some affordable coating that could be applied.  Probably not a justifiable expense from the RR's perspective.

Does such a product exist and if so, is it proven to work?

Why not just graffiti them before they leave the plant and get it over with?

There is a commercial grade clear coat that would work. However, it's very expensive.
As one manager I worked for put it, "at least they (taggers) are using a quality paint that will protect the metal"
Tagging has completely gotten out of control. Railroad management seems totally indifferent to the problem too.

I wonder why the railroad does not shoot the trespassers who paint cars in the leg!

Yes, in 1968 in Corwith Yard (ATSF) in Chicago, the RR dick would shoot his gun at trespassers.....

A lot of new cars represented here:  ARMN 170325-170674 (350 cars), and CRYX 5900-5949 (50 cars).

I noticed that the CRYX cars don't have the Railex logo, unlike the previous bunch (5850-5899).

Do a search on TO, I can't remember off top of my head but know I've read it here a few times at least.

UP buying new refers, that's good to see.  I'd be very surprised if BNSF ever buys another one.  Rumor years ago is that the person who ok'd the last purchase, well, didn't get praised by their leaders at BNSF (an understatement)...

Why not?  Reefers are in high demand.  The person who OK'd the order isn't to blame for bad car / fleet management if the cars aren't being used enough, which would be hard to believe.

ARMN is ART (American Refrigerated Transit) . ARMH was ART and Miller High Life Beer. ARMN is a cousin somehow. TIM
