Western Railroad Discussion > UP Stean fans, a question...Date: 11/20/01 18:18 UP Stean fans, a question... Author: yardclerk Here is a picture of UP Pacific 2889 at Kansas City on September 25, 1948.
Why was the smokestack (I believe it was called a Sweeney Smokestack)so much larger than normal? More efficient smoke removal? or ??? Appreciate any info anyone might have. Yardclerk Date: 11/20/01 20:33 RE: UP Stean fans, a question... Author: up421 UP applied the Sweeney smoke stacks to a number of locomotive classes beginning in the late 1930's in an effort to increase efficiency. I would expect that this was an effort to increase draft and reduce fuel waste and smoke as well as perhaps reducing back pressure on the cylinders, particularly if the exhaust nozzle were modified to change the pattern of the exhaust steam plume in order to fill larger stack opening.
